According to NordPass’s sixth annual Top 200 Most Common Passwords report, “123456” is the most widely used password worldwide and in India. Out of over 3 million users globally, 76,981 Indians have relied on this password, making it both popular and alarmingly easy to crack.
The second most used password globally, “123456789,” holds the fourth spot in India. Other simple keyboard combinations like “qwerty” and “1q2w3e4er5t” also feature prominently, both in India and worldwide.
Why Do People Use Weak Passwords?
Managing passwords is becoming increasingly challenging. The average internet user juggles 168 personal passwords and 87 work-related ones, according to a past NordPass study. As a result, many resort to memorable yet insecure options.
Experts consistently warn against using passwords like “qwerty123,” which can be cracked in less than a second. Yet millions continue to rely on such combinations.
India’s Unique Password Trends
In India, simplicity meets cultural personalization. Examples include “Indya123” as a creative twist on “India123.” Other common choices are “password,” “admin,” and “abcd1234,” reflecting a mix of global and local patterns.
Interestingly, “password” is India’s second most used password, mirroring trends in Australia and the UK.
The Need for Stronger Passwords
Despite repeated warnings, easy passwords remain prevalent. Experts urge users to adopt stronger, unique combinations and consider tools like password managers to enhance online security.
